Timetable changes, weekends until 7 December 2013

Saturdays 26 October, 2 November, 9 November, 16 November, 23 November, 30 November, 7 December

Sundays 27 October, 3 November, 10 November, 17 November, 24 November, 1 December

There’s also a rail replacement bus from Stalybridge to Ashton & Victoria, but we’ve not bothered to include those. The timings for the replacement bus seem a bit optimistic, especially on days when Manchester City are playing at home.

Thanks to First TransPennine agreeing that some of their trains will call additionally at Stalybridge, it’s usually going to be quicker by changing trains at Stalybridge.

Because the additional Stalybridge stops on First TransPennine’s trains were only agreed at a very late stage, they do not appear in any printed timetable, or on the web timetables produced by Metro and Northern Rail

“Rail Group Claim Success”

The Stalybridge to Huddersfield Rail Users’ Group (SHRUG) was formed in 2010. It includes SMART, Friends of Mossley Station and Greenfield Rail Action Group.

The main aim of the large group has been and remains 2 trains per hour along the line. With the imminent electrification of the line issues have become more complex and during the next 5 years disruptions are inevitable.

During the 3 years SHRUG has existed meetings have been held with Transport for Greater Manchester and Northern Rail. It was at a meeting with the latter in July the closures of the line for work in connection with the electrification were discussed.  The closures are between Stalybridge and Victoria at weekends during late October into early December and again over the Christmas/New Year period.

Various suggestions were made at the meeting with Northern Rail about minimising the disruption to services.  SHRUG is pleased to report the rail authorities have listened and an extra Trans-Pennine Express  train will be stopping at Stalybridge during both these periods giving the option of a good train connection for passengers to and from  Piccadilly,  rather than a bus  from Stalybridge to Victoria.

Mark Ashmore, Chair of SHRUG, said:

‘We are most grateful to Northern Rail, Trans-Pennine Express and Transport for Greater Manchester who have made this possible.  We are especially pleased that our views have been listened to and acted upon.  During the Christmas/New Year closure trains will turn round at Ashton, giving passengers the option of continuing their journey into Manchester by the newly-opened Metrolink tram.  A good example of the various modes of transport complementing each other.”

Weekend timetable changes, 26th October to 7th December

Engineering work is taking place at Manchester Victoria on weekends from 26th October to 7th December.

Stopping trains will run between Huddersfield and Stalybridge only, timings are unaltered so passengers travelling between Marsden, Slaithwaite & Huddersfield are unaffected.

There’s a connecting bus provided from Stalybridge to Ashton & Victoria, but it’s very slow.

Due to engineering work affecting Northern Rail services between Huddersfield and Manchester Victoria at weekends from 26th October to 7th December, First TransPennine Express will make a number of additional calls at Stalybridge to enable Northern Rail customers from intermediate stations between Huddersfield and Stalybridge the opportunity of a rail service to Manchester (by changing trains at Stalybridge).

This was one of the suggestions made when SHRUG met with Northern Rail in July.
