Summary of SMART’s response to Railplan 7

SMART has submitted its proposals for future train services at Slaithwaite and Marsden to Metro, as part of the consultation for Metro’s draft Railplan 7.

Railplan 7 has been prepared by Metro, and is intended to set out their vision for rail improvements up to 2026, and to inform the specification of the next rail franchises.

Unfortunately the draft railplan fails to even acknowledge the existence of a train service at Slaithwaite and Marsden, let alone make any proposals to improve it.

We are surprised that Metro has ignored the train service to Slaithwaite and Marsden, when it has detailed proposals for every other train service within West Yorkshire. Maybe they don’t know where Marsden and Slaithwaite are!

SMART calls for

  • a half-hourly train calling at all intermediate stations between Huddersfield,  Stalybridge and Manchester;
  • No increase in the number of expresses until the infrastructure is provided to enable this to be done in addition to a half-hourly local passenger service and freight traffic. Increased capacity for express services can be provided by lengthening existing trains;
  • Improved rolling stock;
  • passenger information screens at both Slaithwaite and Marsden stations, as a high priority;
  • Station accessibility improvements at Marsden to be prioritised;
  • A new station at Golcar/Milnsbridge;
  • Implementation of the Northern Hub proposals in full, including reopening the disused Standedge tunnels;
  • Improved Sunday services;
  • Bus substitution during engineering works to be minimised;
  • A commitment to investigate and remove cross-boundary fare anomalies (the “tunnel tax”)

SMART is opposed to plans to reduce the existing train service by introducing “skip-stopping”.

As the final version of Railplan 7 will inform the franchising process, it is important that it contains Metro’s aspirations for maintaining and improving the train service, and that it covers all routes within West Yorkshire. Without substantial amendment so far as the service to Slaithwaite and Marsden is concerned, it fails to do this.

Update 17th July

We now have a letter from Metro dated 12th July which states

“Several hundred responses ….[have]……. been received on Railplan 7. In considering the responses, including your own, ……….. the Railplan is being amended to reflect the need to improve services at [Slaithwaite and Marsden] stations, subject to a satisfactory and value for money business case being identified.”

 and

“It is Metro’s understanding that the route electrification will allow the 6 fast/semi-fast trains per hour between Leeds and Manchester to be introduced not at the expense of the local stopping service”.

Sunday train services

Unless there’s been a change of plan at short notice without the need to tell anyone – not that anything like that has or could ever happen round here – Sunday trains return from 1st July 2012. Only a temporary reprieve, however, for the next eleven Sundays. After that, from 16th September the dreaded replacement buses will be back until 8th December.

New campaign launched to get railway station for Golcar and Milnsbridge

from the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, 22nd June

Campaigners will be lobbying for a new railway station in Huddersfield.

A new transport group will be formed on Monday to push for a station to serve Golcar and Milnsbridge.

Clr Paul Salveson, a former senior manager at Northern Rail, has organised the meeting.

“There used to be two stations in the area way back, one for Golcar on Station Road and another one for Milnsbridge near Market Street,” he said.

“The suggestion is that we could have a new station near the Old Railway Goods Yard off Scar Lane, Milnsbridge, which would serve Golcar and Milnsbridge.”

Clr Salveson added that it was crucial for campaigners to put forward their proposal before consultation on Metro’s RailPlan 7 ends on July 2.

“It’s important that the aspiration for a station is recognised in the rail plan,” said the Golcar Labour man.

“That’s the most pressing issue – to put a marker down that people in Golcar and Milnsbridge need a station.”

The proposed new station would be added to the line between Huddersfield and Manchester Victoria. Trains from Scar Lane would take around four minutes to get to the town centre and a similar amount of time to reach Slaithwaite.

Clr Salveson believes a station would benefit Golcar and Milnsbridge.

“During this year’s election campaign quite a few people said they would give their eye teeth to have a railway station in the area,” he said.

“More and more people are working in Manchester, Leeds and Bradford so a rail link would be very good for them.

“A station would bring a bit more vibrancy to the area, particularly to Milnsbridge.”

Clr Salveson added that other villages in the Colne Valley benefited from their stations.

“Slaithwaite and Marsden both feel like they are on the up,” he said.

“Having a station makes a difference to people’s perceptions of an area as a place to live and to visit.”

Clr Salveson has called a public meeting about the issue at Golcar Royal British Legion at 7.30pm on Monday.

The Labour man hopes the new transport campaign group can also push for better bus services in the area.

He said: “The consultation on evening and Sunday bus services finished a couple of months ago but I want to keep on lobbying to make sure the services are protected.

“We need a local campaign to improve bus services.”
