Hornby celebrates Greater Anglia franchise with Rail Replacement Bus Set

Model railway giant Hornby has celebrated Greater Anglia’s franchise win with a special Rail Replacement Bus Set.

The limited edition double-decker bus can be placed next to any Greater Anglia station – providing hours of playtime fun as you imagine frustrated travellers cramming on board for a trip to London.

Each set comes with two buses, a hate mob of passengers, harassed staff, a section of broken track – and even a tannoy so the mob can be controlled.

A Hornby insider told the Suffolk Gazette: “Ever since Frank Hornby started the company in 1901 we have sought to produce the most lifelike rail models in the world.

“Greater Anglia is quite a challenge, however, because it does not have many trains that actually work properly.

“We tried recreating antiquated units that broke down all the time, but couldn’t do it. Then our product team came up with the idea of a Rail Replacement Bus Set, given that Greater Anglia seems to use so many of them – especially at weekends.”

A real rail passenger said:

“We have been pretty fed up with Greater Anglia and their buses, and were looking forward to the franchise ending. But inexplicably they won the franchise renewal which began this week.”

The limited edition box sets, priced at £19.99, are available now in time for Christmas from all good toy shops. And some bad ones.

Proposed timetable changes from May 2018

TPE and Northern have shared their initial proposals for timetables with us but it’s been done on the basis that it is not widely disseminated, and not used for publicity and campaigning purposes. It’s for this reason that we have been reluctant to give out too much detail.

However, some detail of the proposals has come into the public domain, not always completely accurately, so it’s appropriate to list some of our concerns here.

TfGM and WYCA (that’s what us old folks refer to as Metro) have published their responses to consultation, and these are linked here.

https://www.greatermanchester-ca.gov.uk/meetings/meeting/389/transport_for_greater_manchester_committee (item 09 refers, downloadable pdf.

http://westyorkshire.moderngov.co.uk/documents/s2934/Item%2010%20-%20May%202018%20Rail%20Timetables%20Northern%20and%20Trans-Pennine%20Express.pdf

They reflect some of our concerns, which are broadly as follows:

  • A reduced service in both morning and evening peaks, particularly to/from Manchester where what is currently a half-hourly service in the evening peak reduces to hourly.
  • Use of platform 2 at Marsden (no disabled access) instead of platform 3
  • Loss of direct links between Slaithwaite & Marsden.
  • Insufficient capacity at peak times.
  • Where there are additional peak hour trains, these are at uneven intervals typically 15’/45’.

The responses to timetable consultation submitted by Railfuture Yorkshire also incorporate and endorse some of our concerns.

Under the umbrella of SHRUG, we met with both TPE (with both TfGM and WYCA in attendance) and Northern to discuss our concerns at length. We also made a range of proposals to improve the service at Slaithwaite, Marsden, Greenfield and Mossley. They have taken these on board and will see what changes they are able to propose. Some of the deficiencies in the timetable are easier than others to fix. Ultimately their proposals have to be approved by Network Rail.

Not everything about the proposals is bad. There are through trains to Leeds, and modest reductions in some journey times, a later last train from Manchester and earlier first trains on Saturdays. Overall, however, our view is that the initial proposal is significantly worse that what we have at present. We will have to wait for the timetable planning process to be completed, but will attempt to keep passengers informed as to what decisions are made, when and by whom.

There has been a second meeting with TPE, at which some proposed changes to the proposals were identified, but it remains to be seen the extent to which the proposed timetable can or will be changed.

New SMART committee

SMART now has a new committee, comprising Cllr Rob Walker (chair), Gary Godophin (Secretary), David Hagerty (Treasurer), Jean Margetts & Andy Tyack. But there’s still room for more.

Three well-attended SMART meetings have taken place (two in Slaithwaite and one in Marsden), but our consultations with the train operating companies have created a fast-moving situation, and it’s been necessary to convene meetings at fairly short notice in order to keep members and supporters informed and to canvass opinions.

An excuse

Apologies for the long time since the last posting on here. This was due to

  1. Leaves on the line
  2. The wrong type of snow
  3. Losing the password for logging in to this site

However, we are now able to announce the largest investment in this website in living memory, which will see the customer experience transformed.

This apology was assembled from the disinterred remains of past press releases from Network Rail, the Department for Transport and the Rail Delivery Group (formerly ATOC), plus a little bit of the truth (no 3, in case anyone was still wondering) added in.
