{"id":495,"date":"2011-12-06T18:03:39","date_gmt":"2011-12-06T18:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.smart-rail.co.uk\/?p=495"},"modified":"2017-11-30T10:44:13","modified_gmt":"2017-11-30T10:44:13","slug":"electrification-of-leeds-to-manchester-railway-line-welcomed-by-rail-users-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smart-rail.co.uk\/?p=495","title":{"rendered":"Electrification of Leeds to Manchester Railway Line Welcomed by Rail Users Group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Stalybridge to Huddersfield Line Rail Users\u2019 Group (SHRUG) welcomes the announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer that\u00a0 the Manchester to Leeds Rail line is to be electrified.\u00a0 It will speed up journeys between these great northern cities and will boost both cities economically.\u00a0 It will assist businesses in these times of constraints and help to counter the north\/south divide in a small way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>SHRUG expects that electrification will enable a 30 minute stopping service for all stations between Huddersfield and Manchester, later trains and better connections from Manchester, Stalybridge and Huddersfield.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To maximise the effect of the electrification SHRUG looks to the re-opening of the currently disused second bore tunnels between Diggle and Marsden. Currently there is a need to close the line for several weekends annually.\u00a0 This is to carry out safety work in the tunnels. When such work is carried the second tunnels could be used thus preventing closures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The re-opening of the second tunnels would also form a passing point for the Express trains over the slower locals; so crucial on a line where timetabling is so tight.
