{"id":1977,"date":"2019-08-20T13:44:19","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T12:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.smart-rail.co.uk\/?p=1977"},"modified":"2019-08-20T13:44:19","modified_gmt":"2019-08-20T12:44:19","slug":"public-asked-for-their-views-on-major-2-9bn-rail-upgrades-across-west-yorkshire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smart-rail.co.uk\/?p=1977","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Public asked for their views on major \u00a32.9bn rail upgrades across West Yorkshire&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[from the Yorkshire Post, 20 August 2019]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Network Rail is to consult with the community and businesses\nin Kirklees, West Yorkshire, as plans for a major upgrade of the Transpennine\nline move into the next stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Planning for the Transpennine Upgrade \u2013 which will deliver a\nhigh performing, reliable railway for passengers with more seats, more trains\nand faster journeys between Manchester and York via Huddersfield and Leeds \u2013 is\nnow approaching its final phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the planning and development of the \u00a32.9bn\ninvestment, Network Rail will formally consult those living closest to the\nrailway between Huddersfield and Westtown (Dewsbury) on the proposals for\nupgrading this eight-mile section of the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They include doubling the number of tracks from two to four;\nmajor upgrades to stations at Huddersfield, Deighton, Mirfield and\nRavensthorpe; electrification; a proposed bridge or a tunnel at Ravensthorpe\nthat will separate two sections of track from each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kieran Dunkin, Principal Programme Sponsor at Network Rail, said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe Transpennine Upgrade will deliver the benefits passengers want from their railway with more reliability, more trains and more seats, and shorter journey times.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;The eagerly anticipated upgrade of the Transpennine Route is approaching the final stages of development, and asking passengers and our neighbours for their feedback on our plans for the section between Huddersfield and Westtown is a significant and important next step in that development process.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A series of public events will take place in communities\nbetween Huddersfield and Westtown (Dewsbury) in early September, with the\nfeedback received helping to form part of a Transport and Works Act Order\n(TWAO) submission that Network Rail will make to the Secretary of State for\nTransport in Autumn 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A TWAO is a legal power required for new railway\ninfrastructure to be built outside of the existing operational railway\nboundary, which is part of the proposal between Huddersfield and Westtown\n(Dewsbury).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Landowners directly affected by the proposals were written\nto in the summer, while every residential property and business within just\nover half a mile either side of the railway will receive an invitation to the\npublic consultation events in the post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first phase of consultation will close in October and\nre-consulted on Spring before the submission is made to the Secretary of State\nin Autumn 2020.
