About SMART

This is the SMART website. SMART is Slaithwaite & Marsden Action on Rail Transport. We exist on a very small budget largely supplied by members.  But are active in trying to promote better services for local people trying to use the train services  for work and pleasure. Throughout 2018 & 2019 we have been very active in trying to undo the damage done by the unworkable May 2018 timetable and influencing the new timetable which was brought in from December 2019; and we continue to be active campaigning for full disabled access at Marsden and Slaithwaite stations.

Who are SHRUG?

SHRUG are the Stalybridge to Huddersfield Rail Users Group. It is an umbrella group comprising the Mossley Rail Action Group (MORAG) (formerly Friends of Mossley Station), Greenfield Rail Action Group (GRAG) and Slaithwaite and Marsden Action on Rail Transport.

The three groups came together under a single umbrella because we have shared interests and aspirations.

SHRUG is affiliated to Railfuture, the UK’s leading independent organisation campaigning for better rail services for passengers and freight. http://www.railfuture.org.uk/

The group has agreed six main priorities which it will press for, namely:

1.      cheaper fares across the county boundary,

2.      half-hourly services,

3.      disabled access on eastbound platforms,

4.      easier connections to Manchester Airport,

5.      improved rolling stock; and

6.      a station at Diggle.
