This is the SMART website. SMART is a small organisation comprising local people who came together some years ago largely to fight the closure of the Northern Rail through train to Wakefield and hence the direct connection to London. We exist on a very small budget largely supplied by members and the Community Shop in Slaithwaite. But are active in trying to promote better services for local people trying to use the train services for work and pleasure.

We work to promote the needs of local people primarily using the train service, but were heavily involved in the taxi-bus campaign in 2008 because the service directly affected people trying to use the commuter trains . Unfortunately the campaign came to nothing .
Who are SHRUG?
SHRUG are the Stalybridge to Huddersfield Rail Users Group. It is an umbrella group comprising the Friends of Mossley Station, Greenfield and Saddleworth Rail Action Group and Slaithwaite and Marsden Action on Rail Transport.
The group has agreed six main priorities which it will press for, namely:
1. cheaper fares across the district boundary,
2. half-hourly services,
3. disabled access on eastbound platforms,
4. easier connections to Manchester Airport,
5. improved rolling stock; and
6. a station at Diggle.
